Walking into the Preview of Art Central was like stepping into a vibrant microcosm ofHong Kong—a harmonious blend of cultures, creativity, and commerce. As I wandered through the exhibits, a question lingered in my mind: how do banking and art—two seemingly unrelated realms—intersect so seamlessly, with UOB as the leading partner of Art Central? This question found its answers during the UOBPrivate Talk, where Christine Ip (CEO of Greater China UOB), Marietta Li (Head of Strategic Communications, Brand, and Customer Insights, HK and Taiwan UOB),and Leonard Tan (Head of Group Corporate Social Responsibility UOB) shared their thoughtful insights.
The theme of the talk revolved around the fusion of banking, art, and social responsibility. Each speaker brought a unique perspective, unveiling how UOBuses art as a medium to inspire creativity and foster community connections.
Both Marietta and Leonard spoke passionately about their roles. Marietta reflected on her journey:
“This job is a blessing to me.”
Leonard echoed her sentiments with enthusiasm:
“I have the best job in the world.”
Their words revealed that their work goes beyond banking; it’s about embracing creativity and contributing to society. Both had returned to UOB after exploring other career paths, deeply committed to a mission that intertwines business, art, and community impact.
Christine, a seasoned leader, offered a broader perspective, emphasising the importance of businesses taking responsibility for societal betterment. Her message was one of purpose:
"I hope you all have a sense of responsibility to make this world a better one for the future."
Creativity in art and innovation in banking share a strong connection, with both requiring imaginative thinking and fresh perspectives. Banking is more than just numbers—it is a creative endeavor, and art serves as a powerful tool to inspire innovation in daily operations. This philosophy is reflected in UOB’s initiatives, such as the Painting of the Year competition and the Artist AlumniNetwork. These programs go beyond financial support, nurturing artistic talent across Asia by providing platforms for artists to grow, exhibit their work, and connect with global audiences.
But UOB doesn’t stop at hanging art on walls—they bring it to the table. Leonard shared how UOB once combined art with food at an event, featuring vibrant, delicately plated dishes that were edible masterpieces. While I couldn’t taste them, the visuals alone proved that art can nourish both the soul and the appetite.
This event illuminated how their efforts go far beyond transactions and profit margins. They are about fostering creativity, building connections, and shaping a legacy of impact.
For me, the most profound takeaway was recognising the often-overlooked individuals behind the scenes—the ones who generate resources, build platforms, and amplify voices. While artists are celebrated for their creations, it is the dedication of people like the UOB team that allows art to thrive and make a meaningful impact.
Leaving Art Central that day, I felt inspired—not just by the art, but by the people driving its impact. UOB exemplifies how businesses can be a force for good, using their influence to foster creativity, connection, and hope.
As Leonard remarked:
“Artis not just about beauty; it’s about creating a better future.”
And indeed, that is a future I look forward to being a part of.
